To our surprise, interest rates have only moved within .2% on all three mortgage rates we track. Why are we surprised? Last Tuesday, Fitch Ratings downgraded its US rating to AA+ from AAA. Markets were volatile after the announcement, which led us to believe we’d see huge swings in mortgage rates this week. So why didn’t we?
Perhaps it’s because Fitch commented that the downgrade has to do more with the US government over economic forecasts. This may not be good news to some, but buyers will consider it reasonable. We’ll closely monitor what rates do in the coming weeks, especially when the Federal Reserve meets again and addresses the US credit rating.
